Hello, adventure seekers and island lovers! After a five-year break...yes far too long... Cedar Surfer is back and ready to guide you through the hidden gems (and not so hidden) of Southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands.
Whether you're a local or a tourist, these islands have something special for everyone. So, grab your sunscreen, pack your sense of adventure and let's dive into five fabulous things to check out on Salt Spring, Pender, Mayne, Saturna, and Galiano Islands this summer!
1. Salt Spring Island: Cassette Cafe and Dive Bar
Okay off the bat, there are FAR TOO many yummy things to list so just head straight to the menu.
Once a 1950s gas station, Cassette has been transformed into one of Salt Spring’s coolest hangouts. Owner Mike Jacobsen (from Tofino) revamped the space in 2022, blending retro charm with seriously good food, great cocktails and jukebox vibes. Salt Spring native Avery Hunter brings big-city culinary chops to this laid-back island gem.
2. Pender Island: Bee Wild Distillery
A newly opened distillery from local garlic farmers, this super cute spot serves up some creative sips - from chocolate and garlic vodka to blackberry and hop gin. Don’t worry if straight spirits aren’t your thing, they also have adorable mini cocktails so you can taste without the burn.
Bonus: The cheesecake fridge is on-site! grab a slice or seven. Vegan options, too!
3. Mayne Island: Mayne Island Brewing Company
A hidden gem pouring small-batch beers you won’t find just anywhere, only on the island and at a few select spots in Vancouver and Whistler. The front porch is the perfect place to kick back with a flight and soak up that easygoing island feel. If you get the chance to stop by, don’t miss it!
4. Saturna Island: Sage Hayward Vineyards
On laid-back Saturna Island, Sage Hayward Vineyards is a must-visit spot for wine lovers, foodies, and anyone craving a slow island day. This family-run vineyard sits between cliffs and ocean, with sweeping views, small-batch wines, and a seasonal restaurant serving up fresh, local eats on a breezy terrace.
It’s not just stunning, it’s peaceful. Grazing sheep, eagles, and the kind of quiet you forgot existed.
For the boating community, there is a dock and mooring buoys. Coming from Pender Island? Check out the harbour ferry Aqua Link
For anyone visiting or living on the island who wants to have extra sips, get a safe ride home with Saturna Shuttle.
5. Galiano Island: Folia Cafe
Opened in May, this new plant-based market café is a welcome addition to Galiano’s laid-back food scene. Offering seasonal bowls, fresh-baked goods, espresso, and plant-based ice cream, it’s the perfect stop for a nourishing bite or a relaxed coffee break.
